No one likes to see players get injured and miss long periods of time. It is upsetting that Brian Westbrook will miss out on training camp as he completes his rehab; however, I try to look at the upside of things.
First, he knows the offense well. It’s not like he’s just coming into the scheme or has only been around a short period of time. He knows what he’s doing and where he has to be.
Next, the Eagles have one of the most physical training camps in the league and he won’t have to worry about injury there. You always see Eagles tweaking stuff or hurting themselves in camp. It happens. Westbrook won’t have to worry about this though as he’ll be watching from the sideline.
He is a leader in this offense, and I think this will make someone else step up and take a leadership role. Although he’s still young, I look for DeSean Jackson to start to develop some leadership qualities. You know he loves to talk and I think he’s more comfortable in the offense now. It all starts with Donovan but he shouldn’t be the only leader on the offense.
The thing I look forward to the most with Westbrook out is the number of reps LeSean McCoy is going to get. Everyone is real excited about this guy and I hope to get big things out of him. It was clear that he was brought in to take a bunch of reps off Westbrook, but with the absense of 36, he’s going to be forced into learning this offense quick and getting a lot of reps.
Overall, you don’t want Westbrook to be in the position he is in. However, let’s look at the bright side of the matter while he makes his recovery.
