I don’t know how many of you got to see the Giants and Cardinals game on Sunday night, but the Giants offense looked terrible. Eli Manning threw for three interceptions and of their two touchdowns, one came on a total fluke play.
Manning wasn’t able to get anything going because the Cardinals called a great game and had him confused the entire game. A large part of this success came from their safeties, Adrian Wilson and Antrel Rolle. These guys were all over the field and never let Manning knew where they were going to lineup. Many times one would approach the line as if they were going to blitz and then would drop off into coverage, closing a throwing lane Manning thought he was going to have open. Doing this, both players were able to record an interception. Manning tried to read the defense at the line, but the way the safeties and linebackers disguised what they were actually going to do kept Manning from making the right calls.
This is exactly what Sean McDermott has to have his guys doing on Sunday to confuse Manning and force him to make errors again. You saw the way that they blitzed on Monday night and I’m sure Eli was shaking in his boots as he watched the beating Jason Campbell was getting.
If you take away the deflected pass that hit Hakeem Nicks in stride for a touchdown, Manning would have thrown for less than 200 yards and not recorded a touchdown. You could tell he was frustrated and could just not tell what the Cardinals defense was going to do.
I hope to see Quintin Mikell and Macho Harris try to mimic the way Wilson and Rolle played last weekend. It’s a fact that the Eagles are going to blitz a lot. The players just have to make sure they hide their blitzes well so Eli doesn’t know what’s coming. If you can do this, it’s going to lead to big time success as you know Eli will make mistakes and force the football. We got a gift from the Cardinals last weekend. Not only did they beat the Giants, but they made it quite obvious what needs to be done to rattle Eli.
If the boys on defense can play like the Cardinals did, it gives the Eagles a great opportunity to win this football game.
