The Eagles have improved to 11-4 and continue their quest towards playoff positioning. It looked like the Eagles were going to dominate early but the team had a third quarter meltdown that allowed Denver to catch back up and tie the game in the fourth quarter. However, the Eagles were able to get in field goal position as time wound down to set up a game winning field goal for David Akers. Let’s take a look at some of the other positives and negatives from the game.
Donovan McNabb – It was another 300 yard day for McNabb and he also threw for three touchdowns. There were some points in the game where he wasn’t extremely accurate but we’ve come to expect that. His 27 yard run when the Eagles needed 25 yards really was the highlight of the day here. It wasn’t a very tough play as there was a lot of open field to run in, but it was very timely.
Brian Westbrook – Westbrook got 11 touches in his return and ran the ball fairly well. It’s nice to have his services back and I hop he can keep improving and really play at the top of his game come playoff time. Having that extra threat is very important.
Brent Celek – Week in and week out this guy performs, but he really had a nice ball game yesterday. He hauled in four passes for 121 yards including a 47 yard touchdown strike from Donovan McNabb in the second quarter. It doesn’t seem like he’s bothered by injury anymore which is great. He is a huge weapon for the Eagles and is one of the best in the league when he plays at the top of his game.
Jeremy Maclin – DeSean Jackson saw a lot of attention on Sunday and Jeremy Maclin really stepped up in his place. I wasn’t sure how Maclin would do coming off his foot injury, but he recorded six catches for 92 yards including an absolute beauty on the final drive of the game to help set up David Akers field goal. If he can keep playing at this level, the Eagles will have a very dangerous duo of wide receivers in the playoffs.
Coverage on Brandon Marshall – Marshall did catch eight passes but only for 39 yards. The guy seems to always catch a lot of balls, so it’s not a big deal that he hauled in eight catches. However, it was nice that the Eagles didn’t give up anything big to him. The guy has a lot of talent and our secondary really shut him down.
David Akers – The guy is kicking the ball really well right now. Having a good kicker is very important and we saw that on Sunday. The Eagles put Akers in a position to win the game for him and he came through. He is a very big asset to this team.
Third quarter meltdown – The Eagles took a 20-7 lead to halftime only to come out in the third quarter and give up 17 points. Our defense let the Broncos get right back in the game and ended up allowing them to tie it. Second half defense is very important and the Eagles can’t afford to have meltdowns like these in the playoffs.
Jamal Jackson – Losing Jackson for the year just plain sucks. He is the anchor of the offensive line and has been one of the few constants on that line. I think the Eagles depth has them just fine, but you’d still much rather have him in the lineup.
Macho Harris – I’m sure there wasn’t a single person in the city of Philadelphia who didn’t want to rip this guys head off. He hasn’t been very impressive returning the football, but his lost fumble yesterday was just devastating. HOLD ONTO THE BALL MACHO!
