After just talking today about the Eagles taking a linebacker prospect early in the draft, the Eagles have made a trade in order to acquire Ernie Sims from the Detroit Lions. Sims spent four seasons in Detroit, recording over 100 tackles in his first three season but not reaching the mark in 2009 as he only played half the season because of an injury.
This move just contines the Eagles progression in a young direction. Sims is only 25 and played his college ball at Florida State.
The Eagles gave up a fifth round draft pick in 2010, the one which they received from Cleveland in the Sheldon Brown and Chris Gocong trade. I was not high on that trade, but if Sims steps in and plays well for the Eagles I’ll have an easier time forgetting about it.
Looking at Sims’ numbers, it seems like he’s a pretty solid player. It’s no lie that the Eagles can make vast improvements in their linebacker play this year and a healthy Stewart Bradley and Ernie Sims look to be a good step in the right direction.
This move also allows the Eagles to address other defensive needs in the draft first.
What are your thoughts on the Ernie Sims trade?
