It seems that there is always a young player at their first Eagles Training Camp who seems to quickly turn into the “fan favorite.” This year that guy has been wide receiver Riley Cooper, also known as Sunshine by his teammates.
When you see Cooper walk onto the field, he is immediately someone who grabs your attention. He’s a big target, with hair streaming out of the bottom of his helmet, and has been on the receiving end of many long touchdown passes so far this camp.
All reports that have come out of Eagles camp thus far about Cooper have been very positive, and it is widely believed that he and Hank Baskett are battling for the fourth wide receiver spot.
This was the belief before the Eagles even reported to Training Camp and it seemed as though special teams play between the two would be a big deciding factor. However, Cooper is making a real strong case for himself to be involved in the offense.
With speedy receivers DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, it would be nice if Cooper could step up and be a physical position receiver much like Jason Avant. He also has the size for those “go get it” type balls and has already been using his height advantage over some of the smaller Eagles cornerbacks in practice.
If his size, hair, and pass catching ability haven’t been enough to get him noticed in camp yet, he’s also been a part of two scraps with corners Ellis Hobbs and Macho Harris. You have to love the fire.
If Cooper keeps up on the pace he is now, he has to have a great chance on making the team as well as having an immediate impact on offense.
