What a wild weekend it was (three cheers for alliteration). I’m fairly disappointed in myself for not seeing a few upsets coming, but it’s still early and I have a lot of picks to make.
Fun addition to this column. My picks will be italicized and the winning team will be in bold. If I got the pick right, it’ll look like this.
Jets @ Bills – The Jets are now 3-0 in their division, 3-1 as a whole. And this was without their “best” WR Santonio Holmes. Holmes is now coming back along with Darrelle Revis and Calvin Pace on defense. Meanwhile the Bills laid down and let the Jets obliterate them. OFFICIAL SEASON PREDICTION: The Bills will go 0-16 this season.
Bengals @ Browns – Last week I said that there was no reason the Browns should be in this game but they would be. I was right about that….I mean, the Browns won. Got the pick wrong but I’m not surprised. The Bengals are a mess and I think Palmer will be cut/traded this offseason. How do you lose to Cleveland when one of your WRs has 222 yards receiving? Baffling….
Ravens @ Steelers – What a great game. The Ravens are down with 30 seconds to go and Joe Flacco delivers a clutch strike to T.J. Housmanzedah for the winning TD. It was a great defensive struggle with lots of hard hitting and I loved every moment of it. If the Ravens can find more consistency on offense they will be impossible to beat.
Broncos @ Titans – Kyle Orton is a good QB. The Broncos most certainly got the better end of the deal in the Cutler to Chicago trade. This is a game that really surprised me though, because I thought Tennessee would run all over the Broncos. It was an exciting game climaxing with the Broncos squib kicking the ball at the end of the game and recovering the ball. Solid win by the Broncos.
Lions @ Packers – The Packers won….just barely. I really do feel bad for the Lions. They have been so close in three of their four games only to walk away empty handed. Don’t worry Detroit fans, your time is coming. I truly believe you are the third best team in your division based on quality of play alone.
49ers @ Falcons – The 49ers are trying to trick me again. They played the Falcons tough and came within a fumble of winning the game. However, Atlanta WR Roddy White made a fantastic play on the 4th quarter pick by Nate Clements and foreced a fumble on the return. Atlanta recovered and Matt Ryan led the Falcons down the field and got them in place to kick a game winning FG. Falcons escape, just barely.
Panthers @ Saints – The Saints did just about everything they possibly could to lose this game. They fumbled three times, losing two of them at crucial moments (the first fumble lost, by Lance Moore, would’ve been a TD) and as a whole the offense looked sluggish. The Saints are really missing Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush right now. Without them, teams are just going to play the pass and try to neutralize Drew Brees and company. For the Panthers Jimmy Clausen didn’t look too shabby. So there’s a positive for you Carolina fans.
Seahawks @ Rams – The Rams could win that division. That’s not necessarily a compliment to the Rams, though they have looked decent. No, it’s more an insult to the rest of that division which looks like a joke as a whole. The Rams beat up the Seahawks and this is a game I’m very mad at myself over. My gut told me to picks the Rams but I didn’t listen to my gut. ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR GUT.
Colts @ Jaguars – I can’t be mad ay myself for this game. I can’t. I don’t know anyone who saw the Jags upsetting the Colts. I mean, a 59 yard FG Josh Scobee? Really? You trying to hurt my record? The Jags shocked the Colts and Indianapolis suddenly finds themselves at 2-2 with an 0-2 divisional record. Is King Manning’s reign coming to an end?
Texans @ Raiders – Arian Foster FTW (as the cool internet kids would say). The guy doesn’t start because of missing and being late to meetings last week and he still carves up the Raiders. And this was without Andre Johnson who didn’t play because of an ankle injury. Matt Schaub also had a great day. That Houston defense just needs to get their act together. Once that secondary is solid that team will be a force to be reckoned with.
Redskins @ Eagles – I don’t want to talk about it here. But you can find my thoughts on the game here. Also, tune in later in the week for a podcast recap.
Cardinals @ Chargers – I’m not a professional when it comes to football. Not by a long shot. But this can be an open letter/statement to all the defensive coordinators in the league. DOUBLE COVER ANTONIO GATES. HE IS REALLY, REALLY GOOD. That is all. Chargers rolled.
Bears @ Giants – No less than four Bears fans called me an idiot for picking the Giants and calling the Bears overrated. I’m sure there were several more who just didn’t tell me. The Bears are brutally overrated and this game helped prove that. And now teams have a blue print of how to get after Cutler/Collins/Whoever can stay healthy enough to be under center. The Giants took care of business, just like I said they would.
Patriots @ Dolphins – It was a fantastic defensive struggle in the first half. And then the Dolphins special teams never came out of the locker room. Patrick Chung essentially had his way with Miami as the Patriots went on to roll in a game that should have been a lot closer than it was.
Last Week: 9-5
