Not too shabby this week….I went 9-5 which is far better than 7-7. It was a great weekend for football with lots of exciting games and I’m here to bring you the recap! Let’s hit it!
(Teams I picked will be italicized. Teams that won will be in bold. If I got the game right it’ll look like this.)
Dolphins @ Packers – This was such an exciting game. Both offenses were clicking and making big plays all over the place but in the end the Dolphins defense was able to come up big in OT and give their team a chance to win. A 44 yard FG in OT by Miami PK Dan Carpenter was able to seal the win.
Chargers @ Rams – One week after being completely embarrassed by the Lions, the Rams turn around and embarrass the Chargers. Who are both of these teams? At times they’ve both looked dominate and at times they’ve both looked hopeless. The Rams defense made mince meat of Philip Rivers and it’s looking more and more like St. Louis could legitimately win the NFC West. Meanwhile, the Chargers reign in the AFC West might be in jeopardy.
Ravens @ Patriots – The Ravens had this game in the bag during the 4th quarter and then they got conservative in all aspects of the game. You won’t win football games against the Patriots in that way. I still firmly believe the Ravens are the best team in the NFL however. The Patriots were able to eek this one out in OT by a FG in the waning minutes. Another great game.
Browns @ Steelers – It started off rough for Big Ben but ultimately he had an excellent return to the Steelers, beating the Browns 28-10. Colt McCoy’s first start for the Browns…..not quite so good. The Steelers are a very dangerous team now that they have Big Ben back.
Chiefs @ Texans – For two weeks in a row now the Chiefs are beaten in the 4th quarter. Last week they were staying tight with the Colts and let up in the 4th. This weekend they were beating the Texans and let them come all the way back to win the game. The Chiefs are a team on the rise but they need to learn how to close games.
Lions @ Giants – The Giants put up a huge lead only to let the Lions being led by Drew Stanton nearly come back and win it. The Giants defense looked dominate against the Bears and Texans but looked very mortal this weekend. Also, I got to tip my hat to Calvin Johnson, WR for the Lions. Last weekend he injured his shoulder and there was talk that he’d be out for weeks. What did he do? Only torched the Giants defense for 146 yards and TD.
Falcons @ Eagles – You can find my thoughts here.
Seahawks @ Bears – The Bears are who I thought they were! And I didn’t pick against em! This is the only game I’m mad at myself over. All season I’ve been saying the Bears are overrated and I knew I should’ve picked the Seahawks. But alas, I picked the Bears. I will give Chicago credit, Devin Hester is still a force in the return game. Kudos go to Seattle for getting a win on the road. Serious question – Is Jay Cutler the worst starting QB in the league? I think he might be.
Saints @ Buccaneers – Every time this season I say it will be a tight game featuring the Buccaneers, the Bucs get blown out. Every time I say they’ll lose, they win. I clearly have some kind of power and I must use it for evil. The Saints rolled all over the Bucs and regained their mojo baby. Meanwhile, the Bucs only managed 6 points. Ouch.
Jets @ Broncos – Bad teams find a way to lose (Broncos). Good teams find a way to win (Jets). The Jets had no business winning this game, fact is that they were outplayed. But they found a way to win and that is the mark of a good/great team. In the offseason I had my doubts about them but they’ve proven me wrong. I do have to feel bad for Broncos fans however. Losing the game on a bad snap by your center is no way to go out. Oh, a Tebow update: He now has a TD. Amazingly enough, the football universe still seems okay. I figured something drastic would happen when he scored. I’m still holding my breath though.
Raiders @ 49ers– I pick against the 49ers and they win. What kind of justice is this? What did I do to deserve this? Okay, in retrospect one should never take the Raiders unless they are playing the Bills. Alex Smith continues to look like a mediocre at best QB, missing a ton of wide open targets but the 9ers finally got their win. The Raiders….well they’re the Raiders. One week they’ll beat a vastly superior team and the next they’ll look horrid.
Cowboys @ Vikings – Give me a moment to soak it in. The Cowboys are 1-4. That’s beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. No, they aren’t out of it just yet but they might as well be. The Vikings have won 2 of the last 3 games and I truly believe they are on their way back up to the top of the NFC North. Favre, despite his injured elbow, played and played good football.
Colts @ Redskins – Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. McNabb was down by a few points and he had a few minutes left to win the game. He didn’t. Now Redskins fans are enjoying what we enjoyed for years. Meanwhile, the Colts are winning games but not looking dominate at all. Ron Jaworski of ESPN pointed out that it appears he’s losing his touch on the deep ball. If that is true then the Colts reign may be coming to and end sooner rather than later.
Titans @ Jaguars – These cannot be the same Jaguars that beat the Colts. They can’t. My goodness, they are. The Titans obliterated the Jaguars, putting up 30 points on them. Meanwhile, it’s another game in which the Jags only mustered 3 points. That’s just awful.
Total from this past weekend: 9-5
