You want clean hits NFL? You got it! And yet, players are still getting injured. Something’s not right here…..oh maybe it’s that this is a contact sport! It was one weird weekend in the NFL. Weird indeed. Fantasy update – I played a dude who had both Kenny Britt and Roddy White starting. I lost. Let’s check out the games!
Winners will be in bold. My picks will be italicized. If I got the game right it’ll look like this!
Bengals @ Falcons – You can’t beat a Matt Ryan led Falcons team at home. He just finds a way to win. In this case he found Roddy White 11 times for 201 yards and 2 TDs. Meanwhile the Bengals found a way to make the game interesting in the second half and Carson Palmer actually had a decent game! That might be the last time I saw that all season! The Falcons won a game that should have been a blowout but ended up being very right.
Steelers @ Dolphins – Don’t worry Dolphins fans, the Seahawks fans know your pain. The Steelers were able to win despite Ben “Don’t Call Him Big” Roethlisberger fumbling the ball away near the end of the game. The only issue? Miami didn’t conclusively recover the ball in the replay. The Steelers come away slightly lucky in what was a fun contest. Side note: Hines Ward may be one of my all time favorite players to not wear an Eagles uniform. He has no quit in him.
Bills @ Ravens – The football universe was nearly torn to pieces over the weekend. The Bills took the Ravens to OT. What may be the worst team in football took what may be the best team in football to extra playing time! What?!?!? The Ravens were able to rip the game away from the Bills (literally, thanks to the ageless Ray Lewis) and win it with a field goal. Raise your hand if you started Ryan Fitzpatrick in fantasy football. If your hand is raised you are either a liar or a total homer. The latter portion of those folks need to get their heads examined.
Jaguars @ Chiefs – The Chiefs might very well win the AFC West. The Jaguars will lose the AFC South. Matt Cassel is getting better with every week. The Chiefs only need a few pieces to truly become contenders and you have to feel happy for those fans. Meanwhile, the Jaguars continue to inch closer to being a Los Angeles team. I wonder if the mascot will change?
Browns @ Saints – Fun fact. The Browns have beaten the defending Super Bowl champions the last three times they’ve played them. This season they beat the Saints. Last season they beat the Steelers the second time they played. The year before that they beat the Giants. This may or may not factor into a pick next year. The Browns came out and tricked the Saints. Meanwhile Drew Brees has been outplayed by rookies the last two times he’s played them. Don’t believe in the Madden curse? That might be a fate worse than getting hit by James Harrison in the head.
Redskins @ Bears – My official nomination for the worst game of the year. I don’t even need to watch the rest of the season. This game was started by two QBs whom, out of the sheer goodness of their hearts, wanted the other team to win so badly. Seriously, is there a worse starting QB in the NFL than Cutler right now? How does this joker have a job? To make this game worse he was facing a QB who makes consistently poor decisions as well! If there was any justice in the world this game would’ve ended in a tie. RUMOR UPDATE: The Bears are planning to sign DeAngelo Hall to a 12 year, $100 million contract next season as a WR. They finally found someone whom Cutler can complete passes to consistently.
49ers @ Panthers – I’m officially off the 49ers bandwagon. They will not win that division. There, I said it. I was wrong. Quit making fun of me. Seriously, the 49ers might be the dumbest team in football. The 49ers might have talent but they have some serious coaching and QB issues. The Panthers get their first win of the season and Matt Moore has a pretty decent game. I hear Jimmy Clausen is an excellent bench warmer. He’s so good they drafted him in the second round.
Rams @ Buccaneers – Oh those pesky Buccaneers, they keep fooling me. Josh Freeman is like the anti-Donovan McNabb. He’s okay through three quarters but then completely turns it on in the fourth and becomes as clutch as Ben Roethlisberger. The Rams lost a close one and fall to 3-4, which is still far better than one could initially have hoped for them to be at the beginning of the season. Their biggest loss was stud RB Steven Jackson who had to have surgery on his finger. Lucky he should only be day-to-day at worst.
Eagles @ Titans – You can find my thoughts on the game here.
Cardinals @ Seahawks – Max Hall proved that he is a rookie. The special teams for Arizona immediately put them into a hole and decided to do so later in the game as well. If it could have gone wrong, it went wrong for the Cardinals. The Seahawks rolled to an easy win and are starting to look like the clear cut favorite to win that division. Dancing With The Stars Update – Do you need any more proof to why Kurt Warner has to be in the Hall of Fame once he’s eligible. That offense has crumbled in his absence.
Patriots @ Chargers – The Patriots let this game become much closer than it should have been but were ultimately able to escape San Diego with the victory. The Chargers have fallen to a pathetic 2-5 mark and the division is no longer just going to handed to them. They’re not done just yet but they’re getting awfully close to being so. The Chargers only prayer is that the eventual return of WR Vincent Jackson can save their lackluster offense.
Raiders @ Broncos – Well…..yeah. So the Broncos….kinda….well. Let’s just say 59 points is a lot for any team to score. For the OAKLAND RAIDERS to score that many….that’s just not good. I mean….there was nothing positive to say about the Broncos. And really, nothing negative to say about the Raiders (wow….when’s the last time we’ve said that?). I do feel terrible for London. This weekend they get to witness the Broncos take on the 49ers. What did they do to deserve that? The American Revolution was a long time ago! Let’s bury the hatchet and give em a good game for once!
Vikings @ Packers – I normally have no issue saying that I’m wrong. But I still can’t bring myself to admit defeat over the Vikings. I don’t see the dominate team that we saw last season but I still see a good team. Things have to gel eventually. Or maybe not, given that Favre busted up his ankle. The Packers got a well deserved win and finally beat old man football. They are now just a half game back from the Bears and they should be able to overtake them in the coming weeks. Minnesota is now in pure desperation mode. Tune in next week to see if I finally give up on them.
Giants @ Cowboys – Look, I hate Dallas as much as the next sensible person. I loathe them. Seeing them fall to 1-5 fills me with utter joy. They are a terrible team and it’s awesome. But, what’s not awesome is seeing players get hurt like Romo did. I can’t stand to see that happen to anyone, no matter who they play for. That said, stick a fork in the Cowboys. They are done. D.O.N.E. The Giants, however, have not convinced me that they’re the best team in the NFC or even the division. They had 5 turnovers and just beat the Cowboys. Against a better team they’d get buried. Kudos to them for getting the win but it sure was an ugly win.
This week: 8-6
