Coming off an extremely disappointing game against the Tennessee Titans, the Eagles enter the bye week with a record of 4-3. The game against the Titans was a very winnable game and the Eagles missed out on a great opportunity to take control of the NFC East. With that being said it’s time to point the finger at an area that needs help fast – the defensive secondary.
The defensive secondary’s performance last Sunday was pathetic. Ellis Hobbs in particular had the worst game of his career and was flat out embarrassed by Kenny Britt. Kerry Collins exposed what I believe is the Achilles heel of the Eagles’ defense, the secondary. The Eagles knew that the ball was going to be thrown to Britt and yet they still couldn’t cover the play. Britt was wide open all day and he would eventually finish the game with seven catches for 225 yards and three touchdowns. The fact that the Eagles refused to make any type of adjustments when it came to covering Britt was absolutely absurd. As Joe Banner once said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result”. Come on Eagles, you have to practice what you preach.
Ellis Hobbs, do me and the rest of Philadelphia a favor and take this bye week to learn the art of covering a wide receiver again. You did a phenomenal job of making Kenny Britt look like the next Jerry Rice. You failed to realize what type of coverage scheme the defense was playing so you might want to brush up on your playbook knowledge as well. It’s pretty obvious why the Patriots allowed you and your partner in crime, Asante Samuel, to move on.
This all brings me to my next point of the other unreliable corner back the Eagles have, Asante Samuel. Take this bye week to attend some Pop Warner games and have them teach you how to properly tackle. Your attempt to tackle Chris Johnson at the end of the game made me embarrassed to be an Eagles fan. The only time you make a hard hitting tackle is if the opposing player is not looking. Man up Asante, it’s the NFL. If you are scared then do not even bother showing up on Sundays. And one more favor to ask, would to please stop galloping around the field and striking that unnecessary pose after a play that never involves you?
If the Eagles want to make the playoffs, this area of the field better get fixed soon because we have big-time receivers like Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson, and Hakeem Nicks coming in.
How do you feel about this tandem of corner backs we have?
