This was supposed to be the season where Kevin Kolb makes his mark on the NFL. This was supposed to be the classic rebuilding year after the dismissal of many impact players that had been around for the last decade. This was supposed to be the year that the Eagles would struggle in the NFC East and would have to fight just to sustain a record around .500. This was all supposed to be until Andy Reid came to the realization that this is a down year for both the NFC and NFC East, which has led to the move to stick with Michael Vick who, like it or not, gives you the best chance to win this season.
This has been a roller-coaster season thus far, but the one thing that has kept the Eagles season alive is not necessarily the Eagles themselves, but rather the rest of the NFC. The supposed to be Super Bowl lock, Dallas Cowboys, are now a pathetic 1-6 and have already begun to book their vacations for the off-season. Mike Shanahan recently benched Donovan McNabb because he felt Rex Grossman is better fit to run the 2-minute offense. What?!? Really? The Redskins are in some serious trouble. The only true contender in the NFC East is the New York Giants and in the beginning of the year there were talks about firing head coach Tom Coughlin.
Taking a brief look at the rest of the “supposed to be” NFC contenders, the Minnesota Vikings just released WR Randy Moss after 4 games and QB Brett Favre leaves every game with a new injury. The Eagles have already dismantled the Falcons and have shown they can play with the Packers. Even though the Saints have picked up their play lately, it’s obvious that they are not the same offense that they were a year ago. It is obvious that anyone can represent the NFC in the Super Bowl this year.
This conference is wide-open and Andy Reid has made the correct decision to stick with Michael Vick. I’ll admit that I am often critical of Big Red’s decision-making, but I am happy to see that he is going for it all this season rather than playing for the future. The Eagles are in a win-now mode and are hoping to take advantage of a down year for the NFC. Strap on your seat belts everyone and enjoy the second half of the year, because this year is not what it was supposed to be and something tells me that the Eagles are going to make a run this year that none of us thought was possible at the beginning of the season.
