Week Eight in the NFL is a wrap. That midway point of the season has come and past and here is what we know: This season is confusing. Like, really really confusing. I’m talking on the level that on most of my picks I’m considering flipping a coin and letting fate take over. But, you know me. I can’t do that. I gotta prove that I’m still among the best at picking games. Yeah, this season I’ve been off my game but I’m feeling a stronger surge to end the season, a la our beloved Eagles. Let’s hit it!
My picks will be italicized.
Buccaneers @ Falcons – The Buccaneers are true road warriors, going 3-0 for the season. The Falcons are true home gladiators, boasting a perfect 3-0 at home. Those stats alone make this a very hard game to predict. It doesn’t help that both teams are about even in terms of quality of play in my eyes. Josh Freeman, QB of the Bucs, continues to prove he is nothing short of clutch. The Falcons have taken care of business for the most part this season and that is mainly why I am picking them. The Falcons, under Matt Ryan, have been darn near unbeatable at home. Give me the Falcons.
Dolphins @ Ravens – The Ravens are at home, coming off of a bye. The Dolphins are on the road coming off another road game (win over the Bungles). The Ravens are still, in my mind, the best overall team in the NFL and I really like them coming off the bye. They’re rested up and John Harbaugh learned under Andy Reid when it comes to game planning during the bye. The Dolphins offense is lacking a spark and a rejuvenated Ravens defense will take advantage of that. I’m going with the Ravens all the way.
Bears @ Bills – I might do something insane here. I might, might take the Bills. I know I’ve said the Bills will go without a win this season but the last two weeks have kind of made me change my mind. Meanwhile you, my dear readers, know my feelings on the Bears. I am waffling back and forth. I feel like a politician. Did you vote? Me neither. I’m going to take the Bears for now but I don’t not trust the Bears at all. Of course, I don’t really trust the Bills either. Oh the humanity. As always, should I change my pick it’ll be in the comments section below.
Saints @ Panthers – I’m not going to say this is a lock of the week. Why? Almost every time I say that I get the pick wrong in some astronomical upset. That said, I do believe the Saints will win here. Let’s be honest, the Panthers are not a good football team. The Saints aren’t on the level that they were last season but they are still the far superior team here and Sean Payton knows how to coach against division rivals. That said, I’d look for John Fox to pull out all the stops here. He’s about to enter desperation mode in order to save his job. Sorry Johnny, it’s not happening. Give me the Saints.
Patriots @ Browns – I’m seeing several pundits picking the Browns. One question…..why? Is it because Eric Mangini will look to exact revenge on Billichick again? Not buying it. The Browns are pitiful. They are poorly coached and they have very little talent all around. But that’s what will happen when you consistently trade away your best talent (here’s to you Pittsburgh Pirates). However, if anyone has an idea as to why the Browns might/will win this game, please enlighten me (I’m looking at you psychics). I’m not that stubborn. Give me the Patriots.
Jets @ Lions – I might be enjoying the Lions cool-aide. And by might, I mean I totally am. I am 100% buying what they are selling this season. I love, love, love what they’re doing in Detroit. Lions fans, the future is bright. Just not this weekend. The Jets were embarrassed on offense last week and knowing the kind of attitude that that team has, that does not bode well for the Detroit defense. Plus, there is no questioning that the Jets defense is still stifling. They held the Packers to 9 points. This will be a good game and if it were played a year from now I think it’d be a great game but I like the Jets in this match-up.
Chargers @ Texans – Did the Chargers reawaken last week? Maybe. Did the Texans give all of us believers a big old slap in the face? Yes. The Chargers offense is statistically the best in the entire NFL. The Texans defense is statistically and in reality the worst defense in the NFL. The Texans were brutally exposed last weekend and I expect the Chargers to take advantage of the holes that the Colts found. It’s a shame really, I was digging the Texans for a while. But until they fix that secondary they can’t win the big games. Gimme the Chargers. Are they returning to being Super?
Cardinals @ Vikings – Brett Favre did not have an awful game last weekend and that was against a good Patriots team. Now he gets to host a floundering Cardinals team. Granted, he will be without Randy “No Buffet Food For Me” Moss. However, the Cardinals are depleted in all three phases of the game and I like the Vikings to sneak this one out. Note I said sneak. This will be a close game but I like the Vikings here.
Giants @ Seahawks – I’m not buying the Seahawks. I haven’t all season and the past two weeks they are starting to prove to me why. Now they’ll be without their starting QB and they’ll be facing a fresh Giants team who has had a tendency to obliterate QBs this season. The Seahawks are pitiful on offense and I think the Giants will flat out dominate in this game. But as always, it’s not a lock. You know what happens.
Chiefs @ Raiders – If you’d told me at the beginning of the season that this would be a game of the week I’d have told you that you’re nuts and should likely check yourself into a mental ward that features straightjackets made of kevlar. But it isn’t the beginning of the season. No, the Chiefs and Raiders are both proving to be teams headed rather quickly in the right direction. This outta be one heck of a game. Now, the big question is who to take? I’m going to go with the Raiders because right now they look to be the more complete team. However, this is another game I reserve the right to change at any given time before kickoff. Give me the Raiders…..for now.
Cowboys @ Packers – Wow, the two prime time games for week nine are….well, lousy and it starts with this. However, I’ll never truly complain about the opportunity to see the Dallas Cowboys flounder because that is exactly what will happen Sunday night. The Cowboys are a train wreck and it astounds me that none of the players are starring in the movie “Unstoppable.” The Packers defense rose to the occasion last week and the I’d be shocked if the offense is as out of synch again this weekend. Give me the Packers, all the way.
Steelers @ Bengals – Can you imagine if the Bengals had claimed Randy Moss? That’d be three past their prime WRs whom Carson Palmer couldn’t find. That equates to a nearly dangerous offense. As it is, the Bengals are truly the Bungles and I won’t refer to them as anything else for the rest of the season unless they turn things around. The Steelers are coming off a tough loss to the Saints but I still like them to go into Ohio and take care of business. Give me the Steelers, hands down (not a lock!).
Last week: 7-6
