9-4. I’m content with that. I’m not thrilled but I’m content. Why? Because this is one crazy year in the NFL. However, the sheer insanity of it all has made for a very enjoyable season. We are past the half way mark of the season and we still have no idea who will be in the Super Bowl. We have no idea who will even make the playoffs. This is beautiful because it’s just so darn entertaining. At one point it looked like I was going to have an awful week picking games. Then teams started making comebacks. It was so exciting to watch and the entire season has. With that said, let’s take a look at what happened.
My picks will be italicized. The winning team will be in bold. If I got the pick right it’ll look like this.
Buccaneers @ Falcons – Any game that ends with a goal-line stand is a good game in my book. Any game that has a 99 yard TD drive is great. Add in a ridiculous KR for a TD and you have a recipe for success. This was a phenomenal game. The Falcons took a fairly commanding lead but the Bucs battled back and nearly won the game. I firmly believe that both teams are for real but the Bucs just have a few more pieces to add to the puzzle.
Dolphins @ Ravens – Should the Ravens be able to lock up homefield advantage throughout the playoffs they are going to be a very tough route. They beat the Dolphins in all phases of the game and I still firmly believe they are the best team in the league. The Dolphins have some serious issues on the offensive side of the ball despite having one of the best WRs in the game. The Dolphins are a good team but are by no means a great team. However, the good news is that now that they’ve lost on the road they should now get a win at home. Hooray for the Miami fans
Bears @ Bills – Yeah, I switched to the Bills. It was a gut feeling. Turns out all I needed was some Tums. When I watched the game one thing impressed me. Jay Cutler didn’t make any deadly mistakes. He did lose a fumble but was able to redeem himself by throwing a game winning TD towards the end of the game. Then the game ended in the only style fitting for the Bills, on a Bears INT. The Bills are fighting, no question about it, but they just can’t seem to get a win. Maybe they really will go 0-16….
Saints @ Panthers – If the Panthers and the Bills were to face off I think the Bills would actually steamroll them. That’s how bad Carolina is. How do they even have a win? It’s a miracle if you ask em. Looking at their schedule, they might not win a game the rest of the season. The Saints obliterated the Panthers in an absolute blowout and a complete snooze of a game. I’m not one for ridiculous blowouts, unless the team getting blown out is Dallas, Washington, the Giants, or whoever the Eagles are playing. Past that, I want competitive games.
Patriots @ Browns – Last week I asked for you, my dearest readers, to explain why people were picking the Browns. No one answered my call. Well, the Browns not only won. No, they also dominated the Patriots. They beat them 34-14. This is a game I can’t get mad at myself over because no part of me really thought it’d be like this and anyone with common sense likely felt the same. But, common sense doesn’t equate to success in this year’s NFL. Are the Browns for real? I don’t know, let’s see if they can win tight games. But they are certainly making some noise.
Jets @ Lions – What a tough break for Detroit. They had a 20-10 lead and allowed the Jets to come back and win it in OT. What’s worse is they would’ve had a 21-10 lead had they been able to convert on a PAT. What’s even worse is that they likely lost starting QB Matt Stafford for the season to a grade 3 shoulder separation. The Jets offense looked awful for three quarters but they pulled it together when it counted. The Lions showed they still have some kinks to work out, mainly closing out games.
Chargers @ Texans – Phillip Rivers has to be the league MVP at this point. He has to be. He is tearing up the passing record books and he’s doing so with guys who have no business being in the starting lineup. Imagine what he’d be doing with a healthy array of weapons. The Texans are continuing to prove that they were simply a mirage and until they get a secondary worth a darn they will continue to be that. They could also use some help in pass protection. Again, the mark of a good team is one that can win the close games. The Texans are very rarely able to do that.
Cardinals @ Vikings – Holy cow, did I call this one! I said it’d be a close game that the Vikings would sneak it out. The final score? 27-24 in OT. Brett Favre looked like Brett Favre and by that I mean he made maddening mistakes that seemed to doom the team only to lead them on a comeback with 4 minutes to go. The Cardinals, well they were the Cardinals. They can’t close out games and will continue to flounder without a defense and a QB.
Giants @ Seahawks – The Giants look fantastic. You can’t argue that. I’d also like to see what they can do against a good team because as of now they have yet to face one and win. The Seahawks are truly awful but don’t worry Matt Hasselbeck, you’re job is very safe. Charlie Whitehurst looked like….a backup. Eli Manning was close to perfect in this game and the Giants rolled all over the Seahawks on the “12th Man.” I’m really liking the Rams to win the NFC West. Man, it’s a crazy year.
Chiefs @ Raiders – This is the one game that I’m angry at myself over. I originally had the Raiders and then switched to the Chiefs. Well, the Raiders won in what was a truly great game. Both of these teams are well on their way to be legitimate again. Was I the only one who felt like I was watching an old school football game when I saw this? It was hard hitting, the players’ uniforms were filthy, and it was just a fun time. I do feel very happy for the Raiders fans though. They were among another crowd to see their team win in OT. Also, is there any question that Jason Campbell is the right QB for this team?
Colts @ Eagles – You can find my thoughts on the game here. I encourage you to do so. Also, I’m thrilled I got the pick wrong.
Cowboys @ Packers – Just give me a moment…..HA. Oh my goodness I can’t get over how bad the Cowboys are. 45-7 was the final score. Let’s just be honest here….nothing worked for Dallas. Everything worked for Green Bay. Had they wanted to they could have easily put up 50+ points but they took their foot off the pedal in the 4th quarter. Also, someone needs to test Clay Matthews for steroids. He’s too good.
Steelers @ Bengals – The Steelers almost had a late game collapse. Almost. But, the mark of a good team is one that is able to pull out a close game. The Steelers did just that. They’re a good team. The Bungles didn’t. They remain a bad team. But at least they have Batman to save them. T.O. is showing up week after week. No one else on the offense is really doing that, however. Oh Bungles….
