I will rebound from this. 5-9 is nothing short of disgustingly unacceptable for myself. I hold myself to higher standards and let myself down. More importantly, I made myself look foolish publicly. I’m not a fan of that (in real life or on the old Facebook). But this week will be different. My trip up has inspired me to work even harder to make my picks properly. The bye weeks end this week so for the rest of the season we have a full 16 games every week until the playoffs. Oh man, oh man, oh man! Let’s hit it!
My picks will be in italics.
Bears @ Dolphins – Thursday Night football continues with Da Bears traveling to South Beach to take on the Dolphins. Right off the bat I’m on the fence with this game. The Bears are coming off two games in which they beat the Bills and Vikings while the Dolphins are coming off a dominate victory over the Titans. However they beat a very depleted Titans team. At the same time they were playing with their third string QB. This is such a tough game but I think the Bears are ultimately the better team. I believe the Dolphins victory last week was a fluke. Give me the Bears on the road.
Ravens @ Panthers – The Panthers are starting at a season that could end with them winning just one game. The Ravens are coming off a loss that has to have the team peeved. That does not bode well for Carolina. To make matters worse the Ravens have had a few extra days to prepare since they played on Thursday Night Football last week. Losing by a few points to the Falcons at home is nothing to be ashamed of and I still see the Ravens as one of the elite teams in the league. This won’t even be close. Ravens on the road.
Bills @ Bengals – I’ve changed my tune on the Bills. I still think they’re lousy but I’ve picked them now for the third week in a row. The Bungles are a team that’s imploding as we speak while the Bills are playing almost every single game tight. A fun fact is that the Bills have won nine consecutive games against the Bungles. How that Cincinnati offense is so….awful is beyond me. Amazing to think that there was a time when Carson Palmer was one of the upcoming elite QBs. Now he’s nothing more than average. Give me the Bills on the road.
Lions @ Cowboys – I’m not buying the Cowboys but they can take care of the injury ridden Lions at home. The Lions are a team I feel nothing but pity for because they are so close to being a good team but they can’t catch any breaks. The Cowboys had a very good day against the mistake prone Giants last Sunday I expect them to do the same thing to the Lions. Give me the Cowboys at home.
Browns @ Jaguars – The Browns are not as bad as I said they were initially. However, they are not that good either. The Jaguars are also not as bad as I thought they were and as it is they’re a decent team. The Browns have not had much success on the road this season and I expect that trend to continue. Meanwhile the Jags are starting to get hot in a division that is truly impossible to figure out. There’s hope for you nine Jacksonville fans out there. Hope lives. Give me the Jags at home.
Cardinals @ Chiefs – The Chiefs were embarrassed last weekend by a far inferior team. That never bodes well for the next opponent, especially when they’re as awful as the Cardinals. The Chiefs are by no means a great team but they’re a solid team and that’s light years ahead of the Cardinals who are missing Kurt Warner dearly. The Chief’s Arrowhead Stadium has returned to the days of its glory and that, combined with Arizona’s pitiful play will lead to a Chiefs victory at home.
Packers @ Vikings – The Vikings are terrible. Yes, I had them in the Super Bowl. Yes, they’ve cost me several games. Yes, I am a Brett Favre fan. THEY STINK. The Packers are good, not great, but good. The Vikings Metrodome is no longer a place to be feared and the Packers will be able to take care of business handily. FANTASY ADVICE: If you still have Brett Favre on your team, get rid of him. Give me the Packers on the road.
Texans @ Jets – Who are the Texans? I know who they are. A talented offense insulted by a terrible, possibly the worst ever, pass defense. Who are the Jets? A team that is still among the elite in the NFL. MORE FANTASY ADVICE: If you have any Jets skills players, please start them. Mark Sanchez and company are going to carve up the Houston secondary worse than John Madden carves up a turducken. Give me the Jets.
Raiders @ Steelers – This is a tough game that I will likely flip back and forth on during the coming days. However, when I look at the Steelers I see the biggest weakness as the offensive line. When I look at the Raiders I see a team that’s biggest strength is rushing the passer. Oh and they’re offense isn’t too shabby either. Ben Roethlisberger is an incredible talent but I truly believe his career will end shortly because he gets hit so much. I like the Raiders on the road in this game simply because Big Ben is gonna get hit. A lot.
Redskins @ Titans – This is a tough one. Again we have to ask, who are the Titans? Who are the Redskins? The answer to the latter is a lousy team. The answer to the former is not so simple. Last week they lose to a third string QB. A few weeks ago they embarrassed the Eagles. Who are they? I do not know. I can’t get a firm grasp on this team but I do know one thing. They have a defense that can get after the QB and they will do that to Donovan McNabb this weekend. I think this will be close but I like the Titans at home.
Seahawks @ Saints – The Seahawks put a shellacking on the Cardinals last weekend. In more shocking news water is wet and Joe Buck is a robot. Them beating the Cards doesn’t make them a good team. The Saints are coming off a bye week. The Saints are a very good team and they are likely going to be getting back a certain Mr. Reggie Bush. The forecast for the Superdome is fireworks. Lots and lots of offensive fireworks from the Saints. Give me the Saints at home.
Buccaneers @ 49ers – The 49ers are the team I picked the win the NFC Worst. The Buccaneers are the team I dubbed in the offseason as the worst team in the league. Oops. But hey, at least I’m owning up to my mistakes. What’s truly amazing is that the 49ers, at 3-6, are very much alive for the playoffs. But I don’t think they’re gonna take a step towards those playoffs this weekend. Give me the Buccaneers on the road.
Falcons @ Rams – As many of you know I’m actually picking the Rams to win the NFC Worst and go to the playoffs (and make an early exit). However, they will not get very lucky this weekend against the Falcons. Now, the Rams are a very good team at home but they will not be good enough against a Falcons team that is among the better teams in the NFC. Give me the Falcons in a close game on the road.
Colts @ Patriots – I think we are starting to see the end of the Colts dynasty. I believe we are also seeing just how truly genius Bill Billichick is. Somehow the Patriots are again an elite team in the AFC. The Colts are still a good team, make no mistake but away from their dome they are not that dominate. I’m somewhat amazed that this isn’t either Sunday or Monday Night Football but whatever. This is going to be a great game, it always is but I like the Patriots at home.
Giants @ Eagles – You can listen to my thoughts on the game here. An article will be up later in the week.
Broncos @ Chargers – The Broncos were overlooked by the Chiefs I believe. The same will not happen to them when they travel to San Diego to take on the Chargers. As much as I’ve loved what Vick has done this season I need to say that Philip Rivers is currently playing at the highest level in the NFL at the QB position. He is going to rip the Denver defense to shreds as the Chargers continue to play catchup in the division. Give me the Chargers at home.
Last weekend: 5-9
