The Eagles will start the playoffs with the same opponent they started with in the regular season, the Green Bay Packers. Although the first game has absolutely nothing to do with the upcoming game, the reason that Michael Vick is starting as quarterback began with the Week 1 loss to the Packers.
If you remember, Week 1 turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Eagles. Vick took over for Kevin Kolb after the first half because of a concussion and did not look back. The reason for the Eagles success this season has been because of the brilliant play of Vick. With that being said, the Eagles tend to struggle mightily when Vick struggles – see Minnesota Vikings game.
It’s obvious that the Eagles are only going to go as far as the offense allows them. This isn’t the Eagles of last decade that was built on a blood thirsty defense. This is an Eagles defense that is starting two 7th round draft picks. This is a defense that gets little pass rush and a secondary that would make Freddy Mitchell look like Jerry Rice.
If the Eagles want to make a serious run into the playoffs, they are going to have to take a page out of the New Orleans Saints book from last year. They will need to put up 30 points a game and have the defense create timely turnovers. More importantly, it will be vital that the Eagles and Vick get their offense rolling from the beginning of the game. It would be nice to see the Eagles dominate the time of possession to keep the potent Packers’ offense off the field, but the Eagles’ offense is built to strike quickly.
Even though the Eagles are not playing their best football going into the playoffs you have to believe somehow, someway Michael Vick is going to will this team to win. Vick said after the Week 1 loss to the Packers that if he played the whole game than the Eagles would have won. Vick will have the chance to prove himself come Sunday. The postseason hopes rely solely on Michael Vick so let’s all hope Vick has enough in him to propel the Eagles to a fairy tale ending.
