The Eagles had the 104th overall selection today, but they traded back with Tampa Bay, taking the 116th overall selection and picking up an additional fourth round pick in 2012.
With the 116th overall pick, they selected Oregon linebacker Casey Matthews.
This was a guy I’ve been talking about all week leading up to the draft, and the past two days as I thought the Eagles may look at him on day two. However, Matthews fell into the fourth round and the Eagles grabbed him.
Matthews is clearly the type of player the Eagles are looking for. He’s a high-motor player and a guy that doesn’t stop on a play until the whistle blows. Matthews doesn’t have the same skill set as his brother, but he definitely can be a solid player in the NFL.
The Eagles looked at Matthews before the draft and there were many reports that the Eagles were high on him so there was no surprises that he ended up in midnight green.
When he joins the Eagles, Matthews likely won’t be competing for a starting position. He’ll be a guy the Eagles will love to have on special teams, and someone they should be able to mold into a starter down the line.
This is a guy I really wanted the Eagles to take and I’m glad they did. He loves the game of football and will come to work ready to work hard every day.
