With the 161st overall pick, the Eagles chose to pursue another lineman. This time around it was Iowa offensive guard Julian Vandervelde.
Vandervelde stands at 6’2″ and 292 pounds and served as a team captain while at Iowa.
Like Danny Watkins, Vandervelde is a versatile lineman that can play multiple positions. He played right guard in 2009, but then he moved over to left guard in 2010.
With Watkins being taken ahead of him, it doesn’t seem likely that Vandervelde will be able to compete for a starting position right away. Instead, like the majority of the Eagles selections this year, Vandervelde will compete for a backup position and look to move his way into the starting lineup down the road.
Vandervelde seems to be a guy with a good head on his shoulders and a hard worker or he wouldn’t been elected as a team captain. The Eagles definitely needed to add some depth at the position, so I’m pretty happy with the selection.
