Talk about a wild week one. You had some great defenses, some brilliant offenses, upsets, games coming down to the wire, and record setting performances. Man, I missed the NFL. Sign me up for ten more years of this. All in all, yours truly had a pretty good week. I’m not pleased with a few of the games I got wrong, but I’ll survive.
My initial picks will be italicized. The actual winner will be in bold. If I got the game right it will look like this.
Saints @ Packers – Can you start off the season in a more exciting fashion? I don’t believe so. This game had everything the offense lover in your life could ever want. You had fantastic QB play. You had huge returns. The game truly came down to the last play. I love it. However, both teams should be concerned about those defenses. They looked like swiss cheese and for once cheese is not something Green Bay desires. Also, Aaron Rodgers is a machine. This is a Hall Of Fame player in the works.
Steelers @ Ravens – I won’t lie to you. I hate the Steelers. I really do. I’m jealous of their success and their fans drive me insane. I also tend to have soft spot for the Ravens due to some family members being big fans. Plus, I’m a huge Ray Lewis fan. Mix all those factors together and you can be sure I’ll always root for the Ravens to pummel the Steelers and this weekend it happened. The Ravens took an early lead and never looked back. The Steelers looked they were dealing with the classic Super Bowl loser’s slump.
Falcons @ Bears – I was right about one thing. The Falcons defense is very suspect. I was swinging at the idea of bad Jay Cutler showing up, however, and I was dead wrong. Matt Ryan looked more like Jay Cutler than Jay Cutler did. I think I got a headache writing that. We gotta give it up for the Bears defense as well. They made the entire Atlanta offense looks like they belonged in Denver. Great game for the Bears. The Falcons are almost certainly looking forward to heading back to their safe house in Atlanta.
Bengals @ Browns – Those darn Browns are tricky. The moment they start to look good, they revert back to their terrible selves. I’m still not going to stop calling them the Bungles, but they had themselves a mighty fine game. Cedric Benson ran the ball down Cleveland’s throats for most of the game. That’s always a recipe for success.
Colts @ Texans – Have the Texans ever looked so dominate? Have the Colts ever looked so pathetic since Peyton was drafted? No and no. Holy cow. Are the Texans truly becoming a great team or are the Colts truly becoming a terrible team? I think it’s a little of both. Also, Arian who? I kid, I kid.
Titans @ Jaguars – If anyone who watched this game from the beginning did not fall asleep at some point, I’ll be shocked. What a remarkably boring game. I’m still not entirely sure why the Jaguars got rid of David Garrard but that’s an organization that’s never made sense to me. Neither of the starting QBs looked great, neither looked terrible. Chris Johnson showed rust after his holdout. Quite plausibly, that cost the Titans the game.
Bills @ Chiefs – The Bills did more than upset the Chiefs at home. They spanked the Chiefs at home. I’ve been saying for a while now that Matt Cassell isn’t the answer and he proved it yet again. The Chiefs will not win that division by fluke again this season. They may not even come in third.
Eagles @ Rams – You can read the review here.
Lions @ Buccaneers – Similar to the Ravens, I often find myself cheering for the Lions unless them winning would hurt the Eagles. I’m a huge Matt Stafford fan and on Sunday he showed why. I earnestly hope he stays healthy this season. I think the Lions could contend for a wildcard slot. I mean that. It was a tough weekend for the Bucs. The lockout seems to have really hurt that team.
Panthers @ Cardinals – He may have lost but man, you’ve gotta give it up for Cam Newton. What a remarkable game. 422 passing yards. If a long time stud does that, it’s a great game. Lost in all that was a very solid game by Kevin Kolb as he tossed 2 touchdowns and 309 yards. It was a great game by both teams. I almost never buy into “moral victories” but I completely by that for the Panthers right now.
Vikings @ Chargers – Sorry Vikings fans, Donovan McNabb is not the answer. Does that sound familiar? Go back to the preview article and let me know. I can’t remember many games in which a QB started the entire game and put up such horrendous numbers. Now, I normally don’t go only by the numbers but come on! 39 yards? You’ve gotta be kidding me. The Chargers showed some of the same problems they had last season (special teams need not apply in San Diego) but they also showed a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. I can’t wait to see them take on the Patriots.
Seahawks @ 49ers – Well done Tedd Ginn Jr. You made your team look competent. Then again, that wouldn’t be too difficult to do against the Seahawks who I refuse to buy into until they have a remotely decent QB. This was another one of those “if you stayed awake you are a better man than I” games. I thought the preseason ended the other week.
Giants @ Redskins – I’m sticking by my Giants prediction. Last in the NFC East. The Redskins helped that cause over the weekend by beating the ever living daylights out of the GMen. Rex Grossman looked…..good? Whoa. Maybe the Mayans were onto something. Either way, the Giants looked terrible. Injuries have killed that team.
Cowboys @ Jets – The Cowboys should’ve won this game. But then Dallas fans across the country were swiftly reminded that Tony Romo was back as their QB. Don’t worry Dallas fans, I bet if you just wait it out a few more years….The Jets continued to be the Jets….looking okay through 3 quarters and then erupting to life in the 4th. I guess no one should be surprised by this game.
Patriots @ Dolphins – My lock of the week was too close for comfort for a little while. And then the Patriots went into kill mode and the Dolphins went into roll over and play dead mode. Tom Brady adds to his legacy by joining the ranks of QBs who’ve thrown for 99 yards after a perfect pass to Wes Welker. Fantasy owners rejoice. Dolphins fans continue to feel inferior.
Raiders @ Broncos – Why not save the sloppiest game for last? My heavens, is there a more boring and worse looking team than the Broncos? What does that team have going for it? I maintain that Tebow should start. If anything he gives you a spark. The Raiders still look like a team that’s steadily improving and I’m oddly looking forward to their showdown with the Bills. How’s that for weird?
Last Weekend: 12-4
