8-1. That would be the Eagles record if games stopped after three quarters. Unfortunately, they don’t and if they did they wouldn’t call them quarters. That’s not the point though. The point is that the Eagles are 3-6 right now and can’t finish what they start.
You have to question why, but it can’t be put on any one concrete thing. I believe there are a number of factors that have led to these late game collapses. They lack leadership on the roster. The coaching has been less than stellar. Most of all, I think they believe that they’re better than they actually are.
Sure, Vince Young is the only one to come out and drop a public bomb with his “Dream Team” comment. However, I don’t think he’s the only one who thought they were built in that kind of fashion. I was blown away this offseason. They made move after move and it looked like it was never going to stop.
This team looks amazing on paper, but that doesn’t translate into wins. We’ve seen what they’re capable of when they click on all cylinders. Look at the Cowboys game. However, there has been no consistency.
They play pretty good for three quarters, but they don’t finish. They think they’re so good that they can just coast to the finish line. That can’t happen in the NFL.
Coaches at every level of every sport preach about playing a full four quarters, or whatever is relative to the sport. Is that point not being made by the Eagles coaching staff? Is it not soaking in for the players?
My guess is that it’s a combination of both. The coaches think too highly of the team and so do the players. They don’t have to preach something as simple as playing hard from beginning to the end.
It’s a shame because now this team is a laughing stock. They brought in a ton of high profile talent and have three lousy wins to show for it.
Do they have other issues? Sure they do, but we’ve seen that you can have all the talent in the world and it means nothing if you’re only going to show up for three quarters.
