That was fun. Let’s do it again. In fact, let’s do it several more times. I’m thinking until at least the beginning of February. It sure was fun to have football again. However, I must admit I’m not thrilled about Thursday Night Football starting so soon…it doesn’t give me much time to get these articles ready. Luckily, I can take it in small steps. As the week goes on, I’ll post more game previews. Let’s hit it.
My picks will be in italics.
Bears @ Packers – This is going to be one heck of an awesome game. I’m taking the Packers but honestly I could go either way. The Bears looked absolutely dominate against the Colts…but it was the Colts. The Packers sure didn’t look too good against the 49ers…but it was the 49ers. All that aside, I’m expecting a great game. I love what the Bears are doing on offense and I do expect some high scoring from both them and the Packers. At the end, if this game was being played in Chicago, I’d likely be going with the Bears. For now, give me the Packers.
Chiefs @ Bills – The first few weeks of picking games during the NFL season are always the toughest; in week 1 a team can look absolutely terrible and in week 2 they can get their act together and become world beaters. The Bills are putting me in this sort of predicament. I believe I clearly overestimated them last week, however I can’t bring myself to believe that they’re that bad. Maybe they are. Maybe they’re actually a great team. It’s probably somewhere in between the two opposites. Now, the Chiefs on the other hand looked back as well. I also can’t bring myself to believe they’re that bad. Maybe they are. Maybe they’re actually..you get the drift. I like the Chiefs in this game and I’m not entirely sure why. This is one of the games in which I reserve the right to change my pick prior to kickoff (I reserve the right for all those games….they’re my articles after all). Give me the Chiefs.
Saints @ Panthers – An embarrassed Drew Brees is something I’d never want to see my Eagles face. Well, that is exactly what the Panthers get to face this weekend. The Saints clearly have some holes on defense that they need to plug up but I don’t believe they’re that bad (noticing a trend here?). The Panthers failed to really make any sort of impression in a pretty sloppy game with the Buccaneers. Truth be told, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Cam Newton go through a little sophomore slump and his lack of pass protection is not going to help him avoid said slump. I see the Saints defense coming in heated and giving him hell all day. Give me the Saints.
Browns @ Bengals – Of course the week that I declare I won’t be making an Bengals jokes ends up being a week in which the Bengals look terrible. Such is my lot in life. Now, the Browns also looked absolutely terrible. I would like to take this moment to thank Brandon Weedon for the win. He was my game MVP. Mike Vick was nearly the MVP for the Browns…that aside…I honestly believe the Bengals are far better than they appeared against the Ravens. They are a very young team that I believe froze up in the spotlight. That happens. Andy Dalton is far better than he showed Monday night and I think we’re going to see that this weekend. Give me the Bengals.
Vikings @ Colts – I initially went with the Vikings here. It would make sense as they are a far more complete team than the Colts right now. However, I have a sneaky suspicion that Andrew Luck is going to set the world on fire (he may burn brighter than the sun…but unlikely) this weekend. The Vikings certainly didn’t look great against the Jaguars and now they get to go on the road and take on Mr. Luck in his home debut. I see the Colts winning be a pretty decent sized margin and the Andrew Luck for HOF tweets to be coming at us around 567 tweets per minute. Give me the Colts.
Texans @ Jaguars – The Texans took care of business. The Jaguars faltered when it counted most. When I look at the Jags I see a team that is going to be in the running for the first overall pick in the 2013 Draft. When I see the Texans I see a team that, if they stay healthy, is ready to make a run at a championship. So based on that…guess who I’m taking. Yup. Gimme the Texans.
Raiders @ Dolphins – I’m torn with this game. The Raiders are coming off a short week and a tough loss to the Chargers. That could either make them play extra hard or extra soft. I’m going to say they play hard. Plus, the Dolphins are absolutely horrendous at home. The Dolphins are also a mess in general and I think the Raiders are going to come, despite coming off a short week, and beat the panties off the Dolphins. Give me the RaidersCardinals @ Patriots – How about that New England defense? Man, if they play like they did last week throughout the entire season, they are going to be darn hard to beat. In related news, my top fantasy pick up during the week was the New England defense. I mean, come on. They’re playing the Cardinals. In New England. I love Larry Fitzgerald as much as the next guy, but he’s not enough. Give me the Patriots.
Buccaneers @ Giants – Call this one a hunch. The Giants have had some extra time off to steam about their opening night loss to the Cowboys and the Buccaneers are going on the road after a tight game with a division rival. The odds don’t appear to be in their favor. I came up with that line by the way. I think the Giants are going to come at Josh Freeman early and often and come away with a nice, clean victory. Give me the Giants.
Ravens @ Eagles – I keep trying to convince myself that the Eagles will win. The Ravens are coming off a short week and they often let down after an early season victory…but I just don’t see it. The recipe for beating the Eagles is simple. Blitz and blitz often. I think the Eagles defense will hold their own versus the Ravens but I see that Baltimore defense ripping up the Eagles’ offensive line and making Vick look terrible again. Give me the Ravens.
Cowboys @ Seahawks – The Seahawks came oh so very close to beating the Cardinals last week. The Cowboys have had over a week off. Normally my instinct is is to take the well rested team, however I just have a feeling about this game. The Seahawks are always a tough team to play in Seattle and they’re coming off a very emotional ending to a game. I can’t fully justify it but give me the Seahawks.
Redskins @ Rams – I like RG3 a lot…you all know that. He had a simply fantastic game last week against the Saints. Time for the rookie to come back down to earth. Jeff Fisher’s Rams came very close to beating a very tough Lions team last week and I think he’s got something delightful cooked up for Mr. Three. I see a tough and surprisingly very fun game occurring but please give me the Rams.
Jets @ Steelers – The Jets are not that good. They aren’t. Trust me. I’m a doctor. The Steelers are also a far better team than they showed last week. I think. Don’t quote me on that one. I only have a bachelor’s degree. I do, however, know the Steelers will be playing with some anger and the Jets will be playing with some arrogance. That’s a combination that will favor the Steelers any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Give me the Steelers. Big.
Titans @ Chargers – The Chargers actually looked like a good team early in the season. Wild. Will it continue? I say yes, just because the Titans look bad and I don’t think it was just because they were playing the Patriots. Overall I don’t exactly have high expectations for the Chargers on the season, but I think that they’ll handle the Titans with relative ease. Give me the Chargers.
Lions @ 49ers – Game of the week right here. I cannot wait. I’m still amazed at how quickly John Harbaugh has turned the 49ers into a powerhouse…with Alex Smith at QB too. The Lions are a team I do have expectations for and I imagine that the Detroit defense is going to harass Mr. Smith throughout the entire game but it’s hard for me to go agains the 49ers. They’re just so good at home and they play a ferocious defensive game as well. Give me the 49ers.
Broncos @ Falcons – Matt Ryan looked like someone who has taken the next step last weekend. Peyton Manning looked like Peyton Manning. I’m in. Runner up for game of the week. But seriously, Peyton looked GOOD last week. Really good. Scary good maybe. That spells headaches for any team early in the season. I imagine both defenses will be tested during this game but I’m always going to go with an offense led by Manning. Give me the Broncos.
Last week: 9-7
