Yesterday really was the most depressing day of the year. No really, Google: Blue Monday. It was yesterday and it’s science. Pouring salt in the wound, yesterday was also the first Monday in over 20 weeks that we have not had an Eagles football game to look forward to.
I will get into a game recap in a later blog but first I just want to say how thankful I am for this year, this city, and this team. Yes, I am deeply upset that the Birds did not show up with their best this Saturday night; it was a game that we should have won. However, there is a difference between being complacent, which no Eagles fan should ever be, and being grateful for a team that far exceeded every person and major media outlets expectations including our own.
Just a year ago we finished a 4-12 season that took five years off my life. We signed an “experiment” coach that members of our own media were calling a huge mistake. Yeah I’m talking to you Howard Eskin.
Then we proceeded to lose a top producing receiver to a season ending ACL tear. Things look bleaker than the ending of the first Saw movie, but we overcame adversity and turned in our best season in the last four years.
It is Jimmy V’s moving words that are keeping me most excited about this Eagles team. Where you started: we started with a team that was picked to finish in dead last of our division and be looking for a coach again in a year when Chip Kelly went back to college. Where you are: We won our division against our most hated rivals in their house to lock up our first playoff appearance in 3 years. Where you’re going to be: This team is something special. People need to remember that this year is also a learning year. We had a first year NFL coach, a quarterback who hasn’t started a whole season, let alone having to learn a new complicated offense. Next year this team will be thought of leading up to the season as a top Super Bowl contender and that’s exactly where we will be heading.
Thank you 2013 Philadelphia Eagles.
