There’s plenty of talk about Donovan McNabb and where he will end up next year (if he does get traded). However, let’s take a look at Michael Vick for a moment and where he will end up next year. It seems a certainty that the Eagles will not be keeping Vick next year. Unless the Birds have something up their sleeve that no one knows about, Vick will be playing somewhere else in the 2010 season.

Vick has said that wherever he plays, that he wants to be a starter and you can’t blame him. He overcame the tarnished reputation he had coming into the season and showed everyone that he’s still capable of making plays on the football field. His numbers this season don’t blow anyone away but he was given limited opportunities. He had his best game in Atlanta where he was given the most opportunities to play. Now that the “trial run” is over, Vick is ready to be a legitimate quarterback again in the NFL and essentially pick up where he left of in 2006.

There are plenty of teams out there who aren’t happy with their quarterback situation and are looking for a new solution. Vick will end up playing for one of these teams. According to Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, teams who may be interested in Vick’s services include Buffalo, St. Louis, Carolina, Oakland and Jacksonville.

The real question is going to be whether or not the Eagles will be able to trade Vick. There will be a window for the Eagles to trade Vick until they will have to release him into free agency as they won’t be picking up his 2010 option. I’d love to see the Eagles be able to get something out of Vick in a trade, even if it’s not a whole lot. Since there seems to be a decent amount of teams interested, I hope the competition to land Vick can benefit the Eagles.

According to PhiladelphiaEagles.com:

The Eagles have swung an important trade deadline deal for versatile linebacker Will Witherspoon. Witherspoon, 6-1, 239 pounds, was acquired by the St. Louis Rams in exchange for rookie wide receiver Brandon Gibson and a 2010 fifth-round draft pick.

Well the prediction I made yesterday about the Eagles not trading for anyone didn’t come true. Witherspoon played four seasons in Carolina and was in his fourth season with the Rams before being traded. He is used to playing the weakside linebacker position but does have experience in the middle. I will be interested to see what the Eagles do with him immediately and in the long term.

The downside to this trade has to be the loss of Brandon Gibson. A lot of people (including myself) were very high on him this preseason and thought he may contribute as early as this year. I guess you have to give something to get something, so hopefully Witherspoon makes us forget about the loss of Gibson very quickly.

The trade deadline is tomorrow at 4 PM and there is now being speculation as to whether the Eagles will get involved and make some sort of move. When asked about it, Andy Reid said, “We are keeping our eyes open. We are looking.”

But are the Eagles really going to make a move here? We know that Michael Vick more than likely won’t stick around after this season, but are they ready to deal him right now? The guy hasn’t proved anything to anybody, so what type of trade value does he really have? There is an article on MyFoxPhilly talking about five possible players the Eagles could trade for. All the players listed are linebackers (minus TO, sweet joke Fox). However, I don’t really see any of them being a good fit. Barrett Ruud is a great player but he is a young MLB and the Eagles don’t need a long term solution. The Stewart Bradley injury was so big and we’re still hurting from it.

All the other linebackers mentioned are playing in 3-4 defenses where they are currently. It’s sad how we’ve gone through so many options as a solution for the MLB position and just can’t find anyone to step up. I thought Omar Gaither was starting to look good but now it seems as though his health might be a problem. Maybe Jeremiah Trotter will come around but what I’ve seen from him so far, I’d rather not even see him dress.

Maybe the Eagles do make a move before tomorrow, but I’m just not seeing it. Do you think they should?

Sheldon Brown and Joe Banner had a meeting yesterday to discuss the current contract status Brown is under. I’m sure Brown and his agent made a pitch as to why Brown wants a new contract and I’m sure Banner listened. However, I’m also pretty sure Banner didn’t care about anything Brown or his agent had to say. The front office is taking a firm stance on Brown’s contract and they’re not going to budge.

I believe that Brown is going to have to shut up and play with the contract he has now, or he will be traded. If he can go out and prove something this year, maybe the Birds will consider something for next year, but I’m almost certain his contract will not change for this upcoming season.

If Brown were to be traded I feel the Eagles think they have enough talent at the cornerback position without him. I believe Asante and Hobbs would be the starters and the Eagles would expect youngsters Jack Ikegwuonu and Victor “Macho” Harris to jump into backup roles immediately.

It is reported that the Eagles have reached out to at least one other organization in regards to a trade involving Pro Bowl guard Shawn Andrews. Everyone knows about the mental problems Andrews went through prior to last season and the saga that was. However, many people believed (including myself) that one of the biggest reason the Eagles brought in Shawn’s brother, Stacy, was to try and bring a level of comfort to him and avoid problems like the ones that happened last year.

Maybe the Eagles know something that we don’t about Shawn Andrews. It is possible that they feel that he is still unstable mentally. It could also be possible that they are happy with Nick Cole’s play and believe he can play in place of Andrews. Another rumor being speculated is that he is going to get the “Sheldon Brown” disease and start being unhappy with his contract. Like Brown, Andrews signed a similar long term contact at an early age. He is signed through 2015.

After this was speculated upon, it was taken back by the same source (Daily News), saying that the Eagles aren’t actually shopping Andrews. This is an odd story and I will have to report back upon it when there is some clarity.

As I wrote about yesterday, the Eagles were in the running to acquire tight end Tony Gonzalez from the Chiefs. Sure enough today, Gonzalez was traded to the Atlanta Falcons for a second round pick in the 2010 draft. The Eagles were only offering a third round pick and were not willing to trade for a second round pick.

I am kind of happy the Eagles didn’t land Gonzalez because I didn’t want to see them give up a second round pick for him. His health is questionable and he’s not the guy that’s going to come in and contribute to the team for years and years. The Eagles have brought in plenty of prospects at the tight end position and will surely sign someone they like at some point this weekend.

It is being reported that the Eagles are the front runner in a possible trade scenario for Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez. Another possible candidate for a trade is the Falcons, a team that some mock draft specialists have going after tight end Brandon Pettigrew with their first pick.

Gonzalez has already discussed wanting out of Kansas City but the Chiefs want to hold on to him until they can get a price they are willing to trade for him. This price is reported to be a second round draft pick; however, it is also reported that the Eagles are only offering a third. Although Gonzalez is a proven veteran, it is not a secret that he does not have a lot of tread left on the tires. I do not think he warrants a second round pick, but if the Eagles could get him for a third round pick it would be a great addition.

Sheldon Brown has come out publicly and asked that he be traded. After losing his starting position with the addition of Asante Samuel, Brown has been disgruntled with the team for quite some time. He believes he is getting underpaid and wants to return to being a starter. It is reported that the Eagles are not budging on contract talks so it looks like he could get shipped out.

I believe the Eagles may have known about this for a while and it could be the reason they’ve been looking at so many cornerback prospects recently. If a trade does go through, it will be interesting to see what the Birds can get for him.
